Committed to Academic Success
- Since our founding as a literary society more than 160 years ago, Phi Mu has been committed to the academic and personal development of our members. We know that the success of our collegiate chapters depends on the success of our individual members – and academic excellence is at the center of a successful collegiate experience.
Each Phi Mu collegiate chapter is required to achieve a 2.75 combined GPA or the All-Women’s Average, whichever is greater, in order to remain in good standing and hold a chapter leadership position.
And our members are not on their own – each chapter has an Academic Excellence Chairwoman and a Chapter Academic Excellence Adviser that provide all members with academic support.
Phi Mu Foundation Scholarship Program
- Phi Mu Foundation is committed to supporting the academic development of our members. During the 2023-2024 fiscal year, Phi Mu Foundation awarded 164 undergraduate and graduate scholarships totaling $194,000.
Most scholarships are unrestricted, but some have been established for a particular chapter, field of study, state of residence or college. The minimum requirement for all Phi Mu scholarships is a 3.0 grade point average and all Phi Mu members who meet the requirements are eligible to apply. Merit and financial need-based scholarships are available through Phi Mu Foundation. Applicants are scored in several categories: academic, involvement (Phi Mu/campus/ community), financial need, personal statements and recommendations.
Phi Mu was the first NPC group to endow a fund through the NPC Foundation for academic excellence. This fund not only helps chapters but also provides guidance and academic programming for college Panhellenics across the country.
GPA Requirements
- Academic success is a top priority for our chapter, and we are committed to supporting our members in achieving their goals. To join and remain in good standing, members must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75. This standard reflects both university expectations and our chapter’s commitment to excellence. Members in leadership positions are also required to meet this GPA requirement to serve. If a member falls below the 2.8 GPA standard, our chapter provides support and resources through Phi Mu’s honor process. This allows us to create individualized plans that help members improve academically and reach their full potential while continuing to be an active part of our sisterhood.
Academic Excellence Support
- At Rho Iota, academic excellence is a cornerstone of the chapter experience. We are committed to fostering a culture where scholarship is encouraged, supported, and celebrated, empowering every sister to achieve her academic and professional goals. Each year, the Academic Chair develops and implements a comprehensive academic plan tailored to the needs of the chapter. This plan is strengthened through guidance from Phi Mu’s National Academic Excellence Chairwoman and Committee, who provide resources and best practices that support chapters in maintaining strong academic standards. Within Rho Iota, this plan is implemented through academic workshops, study nights, tutoring opportunities, study groups, mentorship programs, and individualized support designed to meet sisters where they are academically.Members have access to course-specific study files, textbook resources, academic guides, dedicated study spaces, and campus support services. Rho Iota emphasizes proactive support and accountability through initiatives such as the Mu Mentor Program, tutor program, and personalized academic resources that encourage strong study habits and sister-to-sister support.Academic achievement is recognized through Scholarly Sister, Academic Weapon of the Month, Dean’s List and President’s List recognition, and our annual Academic Brunch—honoring growth, perseverance, and dedication alongside achievement. Our commitment to scholarship extends beyond the classroom through a strong alumnae network that provides mentorship, career exploration, professional networking, and lifelong connection. In partnership with Phi Mu’s national organization, we continually strengthen academic programming and expand opportunities for sister success.Through intentional programming, accessible resources, and meaningful recognition, Rho Iota fosters an environment where academic excellence is supported, celebrated, and achieved together.
